Air loadmasters play a critical role in maintaining flight safety on a number of RAF aircraft types, with responsibilities including passenger management and watching out for hazards around the aircraft.

Heat-haze Typhoons
 Military photography: Four Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4 aircraft have left Romania after a five-month tour of duty. The aircraft deployed to Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base in April 2017 to support NATO’s enhanced air policing mission, and spent alternate weeks on high-readiness standby to defend the Alliance’s airspace. The Typhoons were part of 135 Expeditionary Air Wing, which was supported by more than 300 regular and reserve RAF personnel from 16 units, as well as soldiers from the Royal Engineers. The Royal Canadian Air Force will assume responsibility for the NATO mission from 31 August.

The Reservists visited the Station as part of a week-long period of annual continuous training, which included visits to RAF Coningsby and RAF Benson and flights on a number of RAF aircraft to learn about the importance of air safety.

Military photography

Military photography is what started me on my journey to working full-time as a visual journalist. I served in the Royal Air Force for 17 years, deploying worldwide to support operations ranging from humanitarian aid to warfighting. My final ten years of service included substantial work in media operations. I worked in countries including Afghanistan, Qatar, the USA, Romania, France, Hungary, Ethiopia and Sudan, often shooting photography to help tell the stories of the people I served with. My work for the RAF was published across the UK national press and internationally.
